Social Soiree: Paspaley Polo In The City 0
The highly anticipated Paspaley Polo in the City returned to Doomben Racecourse, on Saturday 12 November bringing the sport of polo to the people of Brisbane.
National team sponsor Veuve Clicquot welcomed international Argentinean polo player Baron Jakob Von Plessen who lead the field in the Pro-Am Challenge against Macquarie Bank. Jakob was later joined by Paspaley’s lead player and international polo star Ruki Baillieu who dominated the field in the Paspaley Cup.
As the temperature soared glamorous guests in the VIP Paspaley Garden Party marquee sipped on Veuve Clicquot and enjoyed an array of delicious canapés along with an exclusive sit-down lunch prepared by Philip Johnson of E’cco Bistro.
Among guests were Australian fashion designers Lydia Pearson and Pamela Easton along with former Rugby Union player Tim Horan. After lunch VIP guests were treated to a pony tour with Australian Polo Captain Glen Gilmore who shared his insider tips and introduced his top four polo ponies.
Brisbane kicked off the first round in the Paspaley Polo in the City series for 2011 which is now in its sixth consecutive year. First held in Sydney’s Centennial Park in 2006, Paspaley Polo in the City has grown into a major national sporting series now played in five capital cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.
Sydney will welcome the Paspaley Polo in the City this Saturday 19 November complete with the VIP Garden Party marquee in addition to the arrival of the Veuve Clicquot Cabana marquee inspired by Miami’s South beach.
GCM chatted to Paspaley’s Australian Marketing Manager Kate O’Shea to get an insight into the sport of kings.
If you have never been to the polo what can one expect?
The Paspaley Polo in the City series gives you the chance to watch Australian and International polo stars play an exhilarating game of polo right in the heart of the city.
Polo spectators not only have the action on the field to entertain them, the sidelines offer views of fabulous fashion being promenaded past themed marquees serving their guests fine fare and refreshing beverages. The atmosphere is sophisticated, fun and truly sensational.
What should one wear to the polo?
When dressing for the polo think chic garden party attire. Floaty sundresses, maxi dresses or chic tailored white pant suits are guaranteed to keep you comfortable and cool along side the playing field.
Gentlemen will look and feel at home amongst the polo players in casual cotton trousers or chinos, linen or light cotton shirts paired with soft leather loafers. As with the ladies, light fabrics and colours are best. Step away from your denim jeans, ties, trainers and thongs.
How would you recommend incorporating Paspaley pearls into your outfit?
Paspaley pearls are the perfect accessory for polo. They’re naturally beautiful and incredibly chic. For the day I recommend a Paspaley pearl strand or a strand bracelet. The Paspaley charm bracelet is also perfect for a day in the sun and pearl studs are a must.
Heels or flats?
When attending the polo ladies need to remember that they will be spending the day on the grass so it’s best to leave your stilettos at home and instead opt for some glamorous flat sandals. If like me, you’d like to keep the extra height then wear a wedge shoe. This way you won’t spend the day sinking into the ground. As your toes will be on show a perfect pedicure is a must.
What do you love about the polo?
I love getting dressed up in floaty dresses, drinking French champagne while watching the gorgeous polo players on their beautiful horses running around the green fields.
It indulges my little girl dreams of prince charming on horseback!
What will you be wearing to this years event?
I will be wearing a stunning 1920’s style flapper dress from the Easton Pearson archive with a magnificent Paspaley pearl strand.
