Sons of Beaches ‘72
Presented by the Arts Centre Gold Coast and coinciding with the 2012 Quiksilver Pro and the inaugural Bleach Festival, Sons of Beaches features a surf documentary and installation that examines the development of surfing in the 1970s and the somewhat subversive culture which surrounds the period, as well as a look at this significant time in Australia’s living memory. Produced by Glenn Blight and Geoff Charters, the film features original footage from a 16mm surf film by Steve Core which was shown at the 1972 World Titles. Don’t miss your chance to experience this white hot period in Australian surfing history. Find out more at theartscentregc.com.au

Henri-Émile-Benoît Matisse was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. Every day, Henri Matisse drew from life. And what he drew from his art was life itself. Matisse: Drawing Life is the most comprehensive exhibition of Henri Matisse’s prints and drawings ever mounted. Presented in partnership with the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the exhibition includes more than 300 drawings, prints and illustrated books by one of the twentieth century’s greatest artists. Until March 4 explore the themes and subjects to which Matisse repeatedly turned throughout his long career. The exhibition provides insights into the artist’s daily drawing practice. GOMA is located at Stanley Place, South Bank.
Bleach* Surfing the Fringe Festival

Bringing together creative pursuits inspired by surf culture, Bleach* Surfing The Fringe will celebrate all art forms kissed by the ocean, encrusted in salt and bleached by the sun. From February 11-26, music, art, writing, film and photography sharing the common theme of surfing will be on display across the iconic beaches and venues of the Southern Gold Coast. The festival will eschew traditional gallery settings in favour of a series of beachside and casual indoor pop up events scattered across the coast, including art housed in shipping containers, mobile music concerts, children’s workshops, a street festival, and outdoor light shows and cinematic experiences. The Southern Gold Coast’s stunning shoreline and world-class waves will provide the backdrop for a celebration of surfing’s vibrant fringe culture. bleachfestival.com
